After saying our goodbyes to everyone we met in Darby we pointed the rig North and headed to the town of Hungry Horse, Montana which is right outside Glacier National Park. Four hours later after going through traffic in Missoula and some of the worst road work in the country we arrived at a quiet RV park right outside the town of Hungry Horse. With most schools being back in and the threat of cold weather within the next few weeks the town and surrounding areas were starting to thin out. We became well known in the campground as the young guys and developed a reputation as the fishermen with a speeding problem (but that was taking care of after Cheggy got a tongue-lashing for driving like Dale Earnhardt!). The camp was right along the Flathead River which actually turned out to have some best fishing we’ve encountered on the trip. We caught 4 cutthroat trout and one endangered bull trout, and of course missed more, on the first night all in about 1 ½ hours of fishing!
The next morning we headed to Glacier National Park to see “The Most Scenic Drive in the United States”. It was an amazing drive on the ‘Going to the Sun’ Road, so amazing that we just couldn’t leave the truck to do all the hiking we had “planned” on doing! It was a park with a lot of opportunity for overnight backcountry camping, which we were not prepared for. They say only 5% of the park is viewed from the roads so to be able really see everything you would have to hike for weeks! We did try our luck at fishing but came up empty-handed. After stopping by all the visitor centers and seeing all the must-see spots we headed back to camp. But before we made it out of the park we spotted an irresistible swimming hole with a jumping rock about 18 feet off the water!! We didn’t swim for too long considering the water was about 42 degrees!! We got back to the camp to do some more fishing on the Flathead River, where I will admit I was outfished by Cheggy. We ended the day with 2 brook trout and 5 cutthroat trout, not too bad for some out-of-towners! After all the fishing we had worked up an appetite so we had a great fish fry with our fresh catch! It’s been a great time in the Glacier Park area but we’re headed south for some Labor Day weekend plans. Stay tuned for the weekend adventures!!!
